Abstract

Purpose: improve fourth-grade students' Javanese script reading ability through the implementation of the Javanese script smart board.

Method: classroom action research was used based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted in two cycles. The participants were 22 fourth-grade students at SD Al Islam Pengkol, Jepara. Data were collected through observations, interviews, tests, and documentation, and analyzed descriptively using quantitative and qualitative approaches.

Findings: the implementation of the Javanese script smart board improved students' Javanese script reading ability. The students' mean score increased from 70.45 in the pre-intervention stage to 81.14 in cycle I and 84.09 in cycle II. The percentage of students achieving the minimum mastery criterion also increased from 50.00% to 81.82% and 86.36%, respectively. These findings indicate that the Javanese script smart board effectively supported students' reading skills and engagement in learning Javanese script.

Implications: the Javanese script smart board can be implemented as an effective and practical instructional medium to enhance students' engagement and reading competence in Javanese script learning at the elementary school level.

Originality: lies in implementing the Javanese script smart board as an interactive instructional medium within classroom action research to improve elementary students' Javanese script reading ability.
